Exploring the work of Hammer Prints

HammerPrints6HammerPrints1A couple of months back one half of TheBigForest was delivering an artists training day at First Site Gallery in Colchester, Essex. The recently opened building is stunning but there wasn’t time to explore so a trip was planned. This coincided with an exhibition of work by Hammer Prints Ltd 1954 – 1975 an inspiring show of prints and ceramics by the artists Nigel Henderson and Eduardo Paolozzi. The exhibition guide says:

During the 1950’s the artists Nigel Henderson and Eduardo Paolozzi established a design workshop named Hammer Prints near Thorpe-le Soken in Essex…they copied, collaged, and distorted imagery to create  a series of patters that were applied to wallpapers, textiles and ceramics.

If you enjoy retro design of the 50’s and 60’s we’d urge you to explore the work of Hammer Prints, the designs seem so fresh and the large wallpaper prints of Victorian patent medicine labels and torn posters on walls (photographed in Paris in 1949 the catalogue says) inspired us.

The exhibition ended a few weeks ago but FirstSite is definitely worth a visit. Look at the website, below, for their current exhibition.HammerPrints4
