We look at the ground and straight ahead with good reason – who wants to bump into lampposts and rushing people – but pause for a moment and look up. Above the traffic and crowds lies another world of possibilities. A span of trees, an expanse of skies and often architectural delights hidden above the grubby shop fronts.
Looking up, over, above, edits out the everyday and unlocks the key to new ways of thinking about life and its challenges. For a moment we see in the city the same sky that arches above the beach, the trees that could be a forest. Sometimes that moment of mental travel, a trick to force us in to a new way of thinking, is all we need to recognise that most of what we worry about is unimportant and soon forgotten and we edit out the really big, and potentially life enhancing thoughts by concentrating on the detail of the moment.
