Open Studios: A Retro Seadog at the Seaside

We mocked-up this fellow with a Brighton flag for a magazine shoot (more of that in another post) but the finished flag says ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’….which we do, particularly on a bright sunny day like today.BesideTheSeasideTheBigForestBlog1CR copy

This vintage inspired dog is sitting in front of the pier and the helter-skelter all chipper with his fisherman’s hat and anchor tattoo – another of the seadogs that seem to be padding around TheBigForest at the moment and making themselves at home.

The background is wooden fretwork with illustrations and he is sitting on reclaimed pier decking finished in our workshop.

Inspiration for this piece? A mix of the Willet Collection of popular ceramics at Brighton Museum and Gallery and The Brighton Fishing Museum. We love 1950’s holiday photos and both museums have lots hence the Festival of Britain colours and even a couple of festival type stars on the flag.

As regular readers know only too well, today and Sunday we are selling at Creative Clerkenwell at Craft Central. There are two buildings packed with design and making of the highest quality so come along. To find out more click here.
